More and more women are seeking natural alternative treatments for symptoms of menopause, for a variety of reasons. Perhaps the most compelling reason for many is the association between conventional hormone replacement therapy and a number of serious health risks, including an increased risk of breast cancer and blood clots, although the link has by no means been proven, and the issue is currently the subject of serious debate among womens health experts. Many women have experienced unpleasant side effects resulting from conventional HRT, including nausea, headaches and vaginal bleeding. Many women simply feel apprehensive at the thought of taking drugs which have been manufactured synthetically.
The whole notion of returning to old fashioned herbal treatments and folk remedies has a certain comforting, romantic appeal. Some of the herbal medicines which are being rediscovered have been used to treat a range of ailments for literally thousands of years. There is a commonly held belief that medicines derived from natural sources are necessarily free from the risk of negative side effects, harmful interactions and allergic reactions. This is simply not true. Whatever kind of medication you choose to take, its essential that you fully understand how it works, what dosage level is appropriate for you, and what objective research has been done on its effectiveness and its potential hazards. Your doctor is the best person to provide you with professional, individual advice and attention. Information you find online and in womens health publications is a useful supplement to your doctors advice, and its wise to read as widely as you can to get an overall picture of the issues. Your health is the most important thing you have, and while you are free to make your own choices about treating menopause symptoms, its vital that you make these choices with your eyes open.
Most experts believe that all of the common symptoms of menopause are caused by the dramatic decline and fluctuations in the bodys levels of estrogen and to some extent progesterone, and the imbalance between them. Approaches to alleviating symptoms generally focus around restoring these hormone levels. Natural treatments are typically made from extracts of plants containing substances which are very similar to the estrogen and/or progesterone produced by the ovaries. The effectiveness of these treatments relies on the assumption that these phytoestrogens and plant progesterones have a similar effect in the body to the bodys own natural hormones. Some herbal treatments work by stimulating glands to produce natural hormones more effectively, rather than restoring the hormones artificially.
Another approach is to treat each symptom individually. There is a range of natural treatments which focus specifically on alleviating common symptoms such as hot flashes, depression, libido problems, vaginal dryness and fatigue.
Estrogen treatments.
Soy
By far the richest source of phytoestrogens (sometimes called ) is soybeans, and foods made from soy extracts. Soy can be consumed in the form of tofu, soy cheese, meat substitute products such as soy burgers, breads and muffins made with soy flour, and soy drinks, sometimes known as soy milk. Some studies have shown that consuming soy beverages or breads made with soy flour twice daily can reduce the severity or the number of hot flashes, but results have been inconclusive and inconsistent. Soy powders and pills contain much higher levels of phytoestrogens than soy foods, and may have a more significant effect in alleviating menopause symptoms than soy foods, but little is known about the potential hazards. Consuming soy extracts and soy foods may have a range of other health benefits, including reducing the risk of osteoporosis, cancer and heart disease, and lowering cholesterol. Some studies suggest that phytoestrogens may actually help to reduce the risk of breast cancer by blocking the overproduction of natural estrogen in the body.
Herbs containing phytoestrogens
Red clover has been used in Asia for thousands of years to treat skin conditions, asthma, bronchitis, kidney stones, joint disorders and breast inflammation. It is thought to work by improving circulation and stimulating urine and mucous production, or purifying the blood. Red clover has been recently discovered to contain high levels of phytoestrogens, and its usefulness in the treatment of menopause symptoms is being investigated. Some studies have shown the herb to be very effective in reducing hot flashes and improving bone density and strength, while others have been inconclusive.
Dong Quai is an important herb used in Chinese medicine, and has been used to treat PMS, menstrual irregularities and menopause symptoms for thousands of years, although its effectiveness has yet to be clinically verified by Western health practitioners. It is also believed to dilate blood vessels, and is used to treat high blood pressure and circulatory problems.
Black Cohosh
Black cohosh is commonly believed to contain phytoestrogens, although clinical studies to confirm this have been far from conclusive. It is a perennial plant native to North America, and is also known as black snakeroot, bugbane, rattleroot and macrotys. The plant has a long history of usefulness as a medicinal treatment, first by Native American people and more recently by alternative health practitioners, and has been used to treat a range of gynecological ailments including menopause symptoms, infertility, inflammation of the uterus and ovaries, and to induce lactation, bring on menstruation, and alleviate labor pains. It has also been used to treat rheumatism, fever, coughs and colds, hives and backache. Some studies have shown that taking pills made from black cohosh extract is very helpful in providing short term relief from a range of menopause symptoms including hot flashes, depression, mood swings and anxiety. However, little is known about the effects of taking the treatment in the long term, and some negative side effects have been reported, including headaches, stomach and gastric discomfort and weight gain.
Maca
Peruvian Maca root is believed to work by stimulating glands in the body to produce their own estrogen and testosterone. Maca has been cultivated in the Andes region for perhaps thousands of years, and has been used as a treatment to increase energy, enhance libido and increase fertility. Maca root is claimed to provide a range of benefits, including alleviating PMS symptoms, reducing depression and stress, increasing athletic ability and creating a general sense of well being. It is also claimed to be effective in treating a wide range of menopausal symptoms, including mood swings, depression, irritability, anxiety, fatigue, hot flashes, reduced libido, sleep disturbances and breast tenderness. Objective clinical research into the effectiveness and the potential hazards of taking Maca root supplements is very scant.
Progesterone treatments.
An alternative view of the causes of menopause symptoms places more emphasis on the role of progesterone, and the imbalance between progesterone and estrogen. Estrogen dominance is a recently identified syndrome, and is believed by a small number of doctors to be the cause of severe PMS and menstrual problems in early adulthood, and a range of severe symptoms as menopause approaches. Advocates of progesterone treatments believe them to be free from the health risks and side effects associated with estrogen based treatments.
Natural progesterone cream
Natural progesterone creams usually contain extracts from Mexican wild yam, which contains a substance which is believed to be similar to the progesterone produced in the body. The creams are applied to the parts of the body where the skin is thinner, such as the breasts, inner thighs, inner forearms or stomach, and are believed to pass through the skin and circulate through the body. Many women have found natural progesterone creams to be very effective in treating menopause symptoms, but there is no evidence to show that the creams lower the risk of breast and uterine cancer, or are free from the risk of side effects as is sometimes claimed.
Chaste tree berry
Chaste tree berry, sometimes known as Chasteberry or Vitex agnus castus has been used since ancient Greek times to treat a range of ailments.

If you walk into any chemist or drugstore you will find that there are several different types of medications for Acne. Some come in the form of topical creams and lotions and others are to be taken orally, some you can just buy and others you must ask the pharmacist for. You can by these medicines in different strengths depending on the severity of your particular case of acne.
It is always recommended to make sure the life you lead is a healthy one. Plenty of fruit and vegetable is very important and drinking a good amount of water every day will really help with your skin, plain water, not mixed in tea or coffee, that doesnt count. In fact caffeine is something that should be more of a treat every now and then than a part of your daily routine. The more you look after the inside of your body the better it will look on the outside, simple and effective.
Making sure that you cleanse the affected arrears daily, preferably twice a day, and applying creams and lotions which contain benzoyl peroxide or salicylic acid will greatly help in overcoming acne. It may help to speak to the pharmacist first to see which is the right medication for you. There are many treatments around and it shouldnt be too hard to find one which is suitable for your personal needs.
For severe acne conditions, the best acne treatments are offered by Dermatologists, they will try different methods like laser treatment or medication or oral antibiotic like accutane or sometimes when it is really needed, the process of surgical incision can be used in order to take off surgically the affected skin part which is otherwise known as the Acne Surgery. Other best acne treatments are the use of corticosteroids which can be injected to the patient. This process will help melt a number of cysts under the skin that causes acne.
Being aware of Proactive Acne medication
Annoyingly although Acne can be on many parts of the body it normally seems to prefer the human face! Which is not nice and certainly in these modern times where looks seem to be everything and it also loves the skin of teenagers, who lets face it, really have enough to worry about! So needless to say having Acne can really bring you down. Luckily, these modern times also bring us modern medicine and with it the ability to use something called Proactive acne treatment. This medication has become more and more popular as it has had some pretty well known faces to endorse it such as Jessica Simpson, Stephanie Seymour and Elle Macpherson. The great thing about these products is that they actually work and in a great and different way to all the other over the counter Acne treatments.
The reason this medication is so brilliant is that is not only stops the condition from coming back but it also mends and heals new spots as and when they start to appear, so instead of having to use several types of creams and lotions you can just use the one and be sure that it will work as well!! This acne treatment is great news for young and old alike and certainly takes some of the stress away which having acne can bring, there is hope after all!
For the Proactive medication to work you must use it daily and as directed on the information leaflet. One of the benefits of this is that due to it not being a spot cream you can apply all over thus making the skin cleaner and reducing the risk of having the condition spread to other areas. You can buy this product in three different products which can really help not only to stop dead the acne outbreaks on your skin but also to help revitalize your skin.
Of course the genius of making this product work is in its ingredients. Allantoin is a common ingredient used in beauty treatment, it helps to re grow new skin cells and leaves your skin soft and healthy the product also contains something called panthenol, but we are more used to hearing this being called pro Vitamin B5. Alongside these we have aloe, renowned for its healing and softening qualities and also chamomile. All these ingredients mixed together will ensure that your skin is left healthy and soft to the touch as it is not just helping the surface of your skin it is working deep down so you will have a glow inside and out!
With the three Proactive acne treatments you can use them to replace your usual morning routine as they do everything you need them too and more! The first step is to apply the cleansing product; this exfoliates the skin opening the pores enabling the benzoyl peroxide treatment to start working immediately and deep down. The next step is to use the revitalizing skin toner, the toner works hard to free up the pores and gets rid of any other debris that may be left on the skin. Finally pamper your skin with the repairing lotion. This gentle but highly effective lotion works deep down into each pore and kills off the harmful bacterium which causes the acne. So you still have a thoroughly good morning routine with the additional benefits of it working deep down to STOP the acne from spreading.

We would then see a cell tower, a hospital or government building with a satellite communications array, a radio station or sometimes, high tension lines within a half mile or so. After a few minutes, the zapchecker would calm down again until the next wireless monument came within range…
On March 30, 2006, Ingri and I traveled from Spirit Lake to Seattle to attend what turned out to be an excellent 9/11 truth event on the University of Washington campus. What we experienced with regard to measurable amounts of ambient electromagnetic radiation was shocking to us and occupied much of our conversation throughout our journey. Wherein previous years there would be miles between measurable amounts of radiation being detected by our zapchecker, the opposite was suddenly true. Our zapchecker was spiking about 90% of the time during our 800-mile round trip. It was only between cell towers and now there is almost always one in sight. In all cases, when we were in urban areas, the zapchecker was solidly spiked - even when the sensitivity of the device was turned down. -Amy Worthington

Acne Awareness Month - June 2009

  • May. 22nd, 2009 at 4:01 PM

A new survey from the Stanford University School of Medicine suggests that a significant number of Asian Americans living in California adopt unhealthy sun-exposure behaviors as they become more westernized. The findings underscore a need for increased skin-health awareness on the part of primary care physicians, dermatologists and people of Asian ancestry, who may incorrectly assume that pigmented skin and hair protect against skin cancer.
“Skin screening and self-examination recommendations, which are often targeted more to people with fair skin, should definitely include different ethnic groups,” said dermatologist Anne Chang, MD, an instructor at the medical school, who noted that skin cancer rates have been reported to be rising significantly in Asians living in Singapore and Japan. “Asian Americans shouldn’t derive a false sense of security from the presence of skin and hair pigmentation.”
Chang and her colleagues surveyed the attitudes and behaviors of 546 Asian Americans in the study, which will be published in the May issue of the Archives of Dermatology. Study participants filled out an Internet-based questionnaire asking, among other things, about their skin type, their degree of westernization and the amount of time spent tanning outdoors or in tanning booths. More than 95 percent of the responses came from Northern California.
In 2007, roughly one of every 10 Californians, or about 4.5 million people, was Asian American.
After correcting for age and skin type, the researchers found that respondents who were more westernized—a measure assessed by number of generations the respondent’s family has lived in the United States, whether the respondent was raised mostly in Asia or the United States and how westernized he or she felt—were more likely to feel that a tan was attractive, that sunscreen was too much trouble to apply and that sun-protective clothing was less important than looking fashionable.
According to the survey responses, the more-westernized Asian Americans also spent more time in the sun and were more likely to actively tan either outdoors or on tanning beds than respondents categorized as less westernized. Specifically, about 60 percent of the 312 respondents whose families have been in the United States for at least two generations reported lying in the sun —a rate approaching that of Caucasian Americans—to achieve a tan compared to 47 percent of the 234 first-generation respondents.
Where the respondents were raised also mattered: 59 percent of the 423 respondents who reported growing up primarily in the United States indicated that they had actively sunbathed, while 34 percent of the 98 people who grew up primarily in Asia reported doing so.
The data jibes with differing cultural ideas about beauty and status. Said Chang, “Traditional Asian cultures, in which a tan is associated with manual labor, tend to value light skin. However, western media often imply that tanned skin is attractive, possibly because it is associated with outdoor leisure activities or leisurely lifestyles.”
The researchers speculate that many Asian Americans may wrongly feel their darker skin pigment protects them from developing skin cancer. In fact, some Asians from northern latitudes may be equally likely as fair-skinned Europeans to burn in response to excessive sun exposure, said Chang. However, because most skin cancers are not stratified by ethnic group in the United States, it is difficult to track whether Asian Americans in California are experiencing an increase in skin cancer rates. Regardless, Chang and her colleagues urge caution.
“A lot of younger people don’t think about the long-term effects of sun exposure,” said Chang. “They may just want to look ‘good’ in the short term for an upcoming vacation or party. But sun and ultraviolet light can cause a lot of short- and long-term damage, leading to wrinkling and facial discoloration, as well as skin cancer. In addition, ultraviolet rays from either the sun or a tanning bed have been shown to be addictive. The more you protect yourself, the happier you’ll be down the road, no matter what race or ethnic group you belong to.”
Chang’s Stanford colleagues on the study include research associate Emily Gorrell; dermatology resident Carolyn Lee, MD, PhD; and dermatology research fellow Claudia Munoz, MD. The study received no outside sources of funding.

In a word - No. You can have beautiful skin on a budget. There are wonderful natural skin care products available these days which will keep your skin looking smooth and young. Of course you can achieve the same results from buying expensive natural products, but.why would you?
I have used natural skin care for most of my life. In the early days because I had no money to buy expensive cosmetics. I can remember looking wistfully through a glass counter (this was the 1980s)at a jar of neck cream. For some reason I believed the skin on my neck was different to the rest of my face and if I didnt get this neck cream, my neck would self destruct into a cobweb of circles and wrinkles!
There have been significant breakthroughs in the cosmetic world since then and there are certain products which claim to reverse aging. These products are called , a combination of cosmetics and science. Its not my aim to promote or even speculate on these products - save to say they are very expensive. Who do you think is paying for all the research? (not to mention the pretty packaging.

I have switched to all natural skin care regimen. I have been using the oil cleansing method with jojoba oil/almond oil and sometimes olive oil, followed by some hot steam. I then use tea tree bar soap. I finish it all with Witch Hazel/Aloe toner and Shea Butter Lotion. I do an olive oil/sugar scrub once a week.
My skin has calmed down significantly, but I still have blemishes around the hairline by my temples and underneath my chin. The acne is just on the surface and they are red spots, theyre not deep or with whiteheads or anythingso thats a good sign. My forehead, nose and cheeks have cleared up and the pores are clean. But I am still having issues with the other areas. I have been doing this cleaning regime for about a month. I am sometimes tempted to go back to chemical productsbut I wont, because it made my skin 100 times worseso I know this is the best way.
Does anyone know of some other effective tricks? And also any tricks for the dark spots/scars left by acne? Thanks!

Detergents found in regular soap are one of the worst causes and it sounds like you are already on your way with some of the natural alternatives. One more to try which is cost effective and very good is using Oats..If you put these in a stocking and tie it up tight it will lather like soap and is good for your skin (doesn dry it out)
Also try avoiding any excess oils to the face are from touching or rubbing or cosmetics.

Acne is a problem afflicting many people in their adolescence and leads to a lot of frustration as well as irritation. Repeated fallouts even lead to depression and the person tends to become an introvert, often apprehensive of going out and meeting people. This feeling of distress leads people to resort to over the counter medicine and also consult other people not well versed with the condition. This over the counter medication proves to be of temporary help and the consultation exercises results in a lot of hearsay and propagation of myths that can potentially lead to further deterioration of the existing condition. It is therefore important to debunk some of these myths and state the facts as under:
1) The first one relates to hygiene and how insufficient hygiene can lead to acne. Some people advocate the usage of scrubs on the face to get rid of acne. While it is necessary to maintain good hygiene, overdoing it by constantly exposing the face to soap, water and the ritual of scrubbing can do more harm than good. It is recommended to just rinse the face with a mild soap and pat it dry. This way, the accumulated dirt is removed without causing any harm to the skin.
2) It is not a fact that chocolates, fried foods and caffeine can lead to acne. These foods may have certain disadvantages overall, but to claim that they can cause acne would be exaggeration. Unless you are allergic to certain foods, which you must avoid, just maintaining a healthy diet with lots of water is enough to keep your skin in good condition.
3) Perhaps the most common myth is the one associated with stress. The truth is that, it is not stress that is causing an outbreak but the medication that you are taking to counter the stress that is leading to the outbreak.
4) Many people are under the misconceived impression that acne is incurable and you have to bear this curse lifelong. Nothing can be farther from the truth and the truth is that with proper attention to your skin and the proper identification of the likely factors that cause acne each time, you can significantly decrease the possibility of an outbreak and even eliminate acne totally from your life.
5) People often tend to blame themselves the most, for the outbreak of acne and the blemishes that an outbreak leaves behind, thinking that it is due to their negligence that has caused this condition. This again is unfounded as acne is caused primarily due to damage to the skin and the fact that certain portions of your skin undergo repeated outbreaks leads to scars.
Now that you know the facts, you will definitely feel much better and more aware of how to deal with acne.

How can I get rid of acne and acne scars??
many people have great results with proactive.
Reply:Visit a dermatologist or your physician. There is a prescription for a cream whose name I forget. This is excellent for acnes and scars
Reply:you should use acne free it%26#039;s a product that really works but sometimes it can make your face dry
Reply:woah! datz wat I NEED 2 KNO!!!!!!!!!!! WOW SOMTHIN IN COMMON! LoL :D
Reply:Make your own little treatment that consists of a cleanser, toner, moisturizer, and any other thing you want to add. I use Neutrogena, Proactiv, AMBI(for fading scars), and Acne Free Scar System. I have no acne on my face! :) but my scars are fading too!
Reply:All of my friends swear on ProActiv but if your poor like me and cant afford a $19.99 product plus shipping, then I DEFINILTY reccomend an amazing $6.00 bottle of Neutrogena Rapid Clear that eliminates break outs in 8 hours!!!!!! I swear by it... It feels funny at first then its fine.. its available at walmart/target.. and it comes in a little box so keep your eye open for that.. Just wash your face in the shower.. I use Almay Moisturizing Makeup Remover Pads Followed by a Neutrogena mask/scrub (its in a little jar) and then when I get out I splash ice cold water on my face to close up the pores.. then put on the Rapid Clear on all my pimples.. go to sleep and wake up pimple free. I promise.

As far as scars go, a friend of mine got slammed into a brick wall and has terrible scarring on his face, and he got a scar healing cream from his dermotoligist. If your interested I could find out the name for you. Im available on yahoo messenger. I hope this helps.
Reply:Proactive
Reply:i%26#039;ve been free from acne since i started using a product called beautiful skin. you should check it out!
Reply:Just know, that if you use Proactive you%26#039;re not going to be able to stop using it because your skin gets used to it so you will break out badly if you stop. I would recommend something else so you won%26#039;t break out and end up worse than before.

(iThe Translational Genomics Research Institute/i) Researchers at the Translational Genomics Research Institute may have found a way to stop the often-rapid spread of deadly brain tumors. A gene with the playful-sounding name NHERF-1 may be a serious target for drugs that could prevent malignant tumors from rapidly multiplying and invading other parts of the brain, according to a cover story in this month's edition of Neoplasia, an international journal of cancer research.

Acne After Thirty? - Fit After Thirty

Most people have abdominal training all wrong.  They do zillions of crunches and expect to get a nice, flat stomach—and most of the time, they get absolutely zero results.
So what’s so wrong with the crunch?
The crunch actually recruits the hip flexors much more than the abdominal wall.  Plus, they only work the abs through trunk flexion.  And if you want to fully develop a sexy midsection, you need to train your abs through multiple types of movements.
However, today we’re going to focus on one specific way to train the abs: stabilization. Stabilization is the primary role of the core and it’s often neglected.
So I’m going to supercharge your ab routine and give 5 of the BEST stabilization exercises to start incorporating into your workouts. Youll need an exercise ball like the one in these clips.
1. Swiss Ball Leg Lifts
I believe in getting the toughest exercise out of the way first.  And this is DEFINITELY the toughest exercise out of the bunch!  It involves hip flexion and stabilization—making it extremely difficult.
You should feel this throughout your entire midsection—especially the lower abs and the obliques.
Start by lying on your back on a Swiss Ball, making sure your low back is supported.  Make sure you have something to hold onto behind you.  Extend the arms back and keep a slight bend in the elbow while you hold onto a support.
Elevate the legs off of the ground with a slight bend in the knee and lift them up as far as you can while keeping tension on the abs.  Pause at the top and slowly lower them back to the starting position.  Pause again at the bottom and then repeat.

Acne is a skin disease that occurs in any area of the body including the scalp. Some cases of scalp acne are now common with a great number of people who are affected by it. Well, scalp acne is just a new form of acne. It literally appears on the scalp and is caused by the same factors as to that of the facial acne.

In generally, scalp acne is scientifically known as scalp folliculitis, which is an inflammatory disorder of the hair follicles in the scalp. It is now commonly known as acne necrotica miliaris or Proprionibacterium acne folliculitis. Just like some of the typical acnes, the scalp acne is actually characterized by small pustules within the scalp. Many of its victims have noted that scalp acne is really itchy and often troublesome on the frontal hairline. There are also some cases that have shown scalp acne that vary from a small number of lesions to numerous. And, since they are located on the head and very itchy, many of its victims have noted that scalp acne is hard to leave alone. There are even some instances that this condition becomes sore and crusted.

The scalp acne may take a few weeks to clear up. Certain studies have also shown that the scalp acne seems to develop and form especially during times of high stress or when the scalp is oilier than normal. There are even some studies which show that scalp acne occurs if you havent shampooed your hair as often as usual or when you are applying hair-care products with a great amount of oil.

Being a serious medical condition, scalp acne is worth treating. One of the first steps to take for treating this condition is to wash the scalp with a mild normal shampoo as often as desired. However, you should note that an antidandruff shampoo, as opposed to what many people have claimed, is not helpful for scalp acne, but a conditioner can be applied if desired. There are also some topical antibiotics like the fucidin gel, clindamycin solution and the erythromycin solution that can be helpful for treating scalp acne. Mild topical steroid lotions or creams are also there along with the oral antihistamines, oral antibiotics, and the oral isotretinoin.

Today, there was a known form of scalp acne called acne necrotica, which is actually the more severe form of scalp folliculitis. This is deemed as the more severe form of scalp acne knowing that it is characterized by larger follicular spots or papules that are become inflamed and formed blackened crusts that finally leave permanent and lifetime pox-like scars. This severe form of scalp acne may also affect the face, and other areas other than the scalp. It should then be treated with a guidance of an expert.

I used to have really bad acne that covered basically my whole face, mostly my cheeks. I still get zits that pop up now and then, but its totally manageable. Now, the problem Im having is that I have a bunch of scarring left over on my cheeks from the acne I used to have.
I have been using the ProActiv 3-step system and i also have been using ProActivs skin lightening lotion, though i havent noticed much of an improvement. I dont have any deep scarring or anything, but its about moderate. I hate having these marks on my face and ive been trying to get rid of them for a while.
Is there any easy-enough solution to getting rid of moderate acne scarring without having to get involved in surgical processes such as dermabrasion.
