I don’t know what you think about it but it sure seems to me like we’ve got a government that thinks that the answer to every problem in our society can be fixed with a new program and new taxes. I’m just wondering where in the world they think that money is going to come from. Here’s the latest backlash I’ve seen. This one is in response to the idea that we should tax certain foods and beverages. I don’t see how anyone can believe we can solve things like obesity by taxes.

Non-compliance with medications for chronic illness is a huge problem. Not taking the medication can lead to worsening symptoms, but for a number of different reasons taking all of your medications can be really difficult, especially when you need to take them multiple times per day.
How often do you miss your medication? Take the poll and leave a comment how you remember to take your medications or why it is so difficult for you.

Newswise Nearly one third of caregivers in low-income, urban areas used albuterol improperly in the home when treating children for acute asthma symptoms, according to a report published this month in Annals of Allergy, Asthma Immunology, the scientific journal of the American College of Allergy, Asthma and Immunology (ACAAI).
Jane M. Garbutt, MB, ChB, FRCP (C), associate professor of medicine and pediatrics, medical director of Washington University Pediatric/Adolescent Ambulatory Research Consortium, Washington University School of Medicine, St. Louis, Mo., and colleagues, report that 32 percent of 114 caregivers in the intervention group of a randomized trial to reduce emergent care for low-income urban children used albuterol inappropriately (over-treatment or under-treatment).
Albuterol is the most effective treatment for providing prompt relief from worsening asthma systems and is recommended for home use, guided by an asthma action plan, note the authors.
The caregivers completed a structured telephone interview with an asthma nurse to evaluate home management of their childs acute asthma symptoms. Albuterol use for worsening asthma symptoms was categorized as appropriate for only 68 percent of caregivers, and was more likely if the children had an emergency department visit or hospitalization for asthma in the prior year.
Reportedly having an asthma action plan, or a recent primary care physician visit to discuss asthma maintenance care, did not increase the likelihood that albuterol use was appropriate.
Caregivers reported that they would use albuterol to treat their childs worsening asthma symptoms, but many described inappropriate use, the authors conclude. Detailed evaluation of proper albuterol use at home may provide insight into how health care professionals can better educate and support parents in their management of acute exacerbations and more effective use of asthma action plans.
The National Asthma Education and Prevention Program (NAEPP) guidelines recommend early treatment of acute asthma symptoms with albuterol and oral corticosteroids.

Caffeine decreases wheezing, coughing, and other symptoms of exercise induced asthma (EIA) according to a study from the Department of Kinesiology at Indiana University.
In a press release, the authors describe the effects of caffeine on EIA in 10 patients. A dose of 9 millogram per kilogram (mg/kg) of body weight before exercising was equivalent to using an albuterol inhaler before exercising. Lower doses of 3 and 6 mg/kg, respectively, did not decrease symptoms as well as the albuterol inhaler, but decreased the symptoms compared to placebo. No additional benefit was seen when combining albuterol with caffeine.
What does this mean for me? One should not go out and ramp up their caffiene intake on this study. It will however guide further study as researchers begin to look at other treatments for EIA.

If you are a woman over the age of 40, you probably know that you should be taking Vitamin D. Unfortunately, many women don't get enough. But did you know that not getting enough Vitamin D might be affecting your asthma?
According to researchers from the University of Pennsylvania, vitamin D may slow the progressive decline in lung function resulting from airway remodeling over time. In airway remodeling certain types of smooth muscle grow more prominent, cause inflammation, and can cause damage to the lungs. The researchers believe that the remodeling can possibly be prevented or slowed down if adequate amounts of vitamin D are consumed.
The researchers found that vitamin D decreased growth of smooth muscle inflammation in the lungs of 12 volunteers more than other potent anti-inflammatories. While the studies are preliminary, they continue to study vitamin D as an asthma therapy. According to a press release, the authors are going to preform a randomized controlled trial to determine the effect of vitamin D supplementation on patients with severe asthma.
How much vitamin D do you take? Would you consider taking more if studies end up demonstrating that it might improve your asthma.

While it is commonly thought that kids with asthma miss more school than their peers, a study published online in Chest from the Baylor University Medical Center at Dallas and the Dallas Independent School District finds asthmatic children do not miss any more school than their peers.
"We all know the devastating effect of untreated asthma on both academic and athletic performance, but our data suggests that the tide has turned, and with proper supervision and management, the impact of asthma can be minimized," according to lead author and medical director of the Baylor Lung Care Center Mark Millard, M.D. in a press release. "Parents should expect that their child with asthma should be able to compete with the same degree of success as non-asthmatic peers, with current asthma medications."
Dr. Millard points out the importance of school nurses in achieving these results. Nurses actively identified asthma patients and worked with primary care doctors to achieve good control and keep kids in school. "Any child in any school district can achieve good asthma control, if there is access to the right medications and oversight," Millard said. "A well-trained and empowered school registered nurse may be the best solution to deal with the problem of uncontrolled asthma in children."
Do your kids schools have school nurses and have you noticed a similar benefit?

We started out our weekend with the boy's first baseball games with Declo Rec. The both did awesome! Landon is still on T-Ball and he surprised us both with several amazing hits and great catch while playing pitcher. Keegan had a great game as well and hit off the pitching machine every time he was up to bat. While we were at baseball Alisha called and asked if we wanted to dye eggs after we were done with her and Christy's kids.. We happily accepted and after baseball we headed into town and David went to do a small job. Before going to grandma's we stopped at Taco Bandido for some lunch. Ashton shocked me by eating a crisp taco with meat and cheese and half of Landon's soft meat burrito! Now if I could only get him to eat taco meat at home! After lunch we went to grandma's house and played with the cousins and then dyed eggs. Alisha and I were both worried about dying eggs at grandma's on her nice table, that is on her nice carpet. Especially since grandma and papa were at the temple and had NO idea were doing this activity at their house. So Alisha and I hovered and made sure no incidents occurred. Zander was the only one who broke the "No fingers in the dye" rule and then wiped his fingers off on his shirt! Luckily it came clean along with all the towels we used to protect the table and chairs. We ended up playing over there the rest of the day and having dinner. We came home and Landon and Ash were already sleeping so I changed them into their jammies and put them to bed. The Easter bunny was nice enough to leave the boys baskets even though they had forgotten to clean up their toys that morning. After checking out their baskets in the morning they hurried and got them cleaned up while I made breakfast. I made tons of sausage links and some cinnamon muffins which kept everyone one full and happy until it was time to go have dinner at grandma's house. We had a great dinner followed by a Easter egg hunt organized by Alisha. Each kid had their own color and the same amount of eggs so everyone had a fair chance to get some candy. Unfortunately I don't have any pictures since the batteries were dead in the camera I have "borrowed" from mom. :) Since Alisha always has a camera, or two, with her there are a few shots of my kids on her Easter post. So head over there to check them out.

How might the technology that keeps you from getting lost in your car lead to better asthma control? David Van Sickle, a Robert Wood Johnson Foundation Health and Society Scholar in the Department of Population Health Sciences at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, wants to map where environmental exposures cause asthmatics to use their rescue inhalers.
Bt attaching the global positioning device directly to the inhaler Van Sickle hopes to be able to identify previously unknown causes of asthma and help health care providers better monitor asthma control. "Established risk factors for asthma do not explain its global prevalence patterns and time trends," says Van Sickle in a UW press release. "Studies of epidemic asthma have demonstrated that understanding the locations where asthma exacerbations occur can help identify important new exposures." Van Sickle says he can envision a time when GPS mapping of asthma outbreaks can allow researchers to "see" exactly what is making people sick. "It will allow us to better target public-health interventions to the places and times when people are really suffering."
If you are interested in participating in the Asthmap trial you must be 18, have a diagnosis of asthma, and use a rescue inhaler (bronchodilator). For more information, call 608-261-1036 or e-mail asthmap@mailplus.wisc.edu.
Do you think a GPS type inhaler might help your asthma.

Over the last several years, custodial/ cleaning staff have been noted to have an occupational risk because of increased reports of asthma and other respiratory illnesses. A study just published online in Environmental Health has found that cleaning staff in hospitals are at risk for a number of different occupational exposures and that because of the properties of some the agents used by cleaning staff, other employees and even patients nay be at risk because of the duration of how long some of the agents remain in the local environment.
Anila Bello and colleagues preformed workplace interviews, reviewed product Materials Safety Data Sheets, reviewed the chemical properties of cleaning ingredients, and preformed occupational hygiene observational analyses in order to determine the occupational exposures of cleaning products used for common cleaning tasks in hospitals.
The investigators found a variety of differnt chemical compounds used for different tasks in the hospitals. Importantly, the authors concluded "There is evidence of exposures to respiratory and dermal irritants and sensitizers from cleaning products" and that "Hazardous exposures related to cleaning products are an important public health concern because these exposures impact not only cleaning workers, but also other occupants in the building."
Have you ever wondered why your asthma flares when in a certain building? It may be that while with good intentions, some sort of cleaning product is making your asthma worse.

Asthma exacerbations can be life threatening and can occur in anyone with mild to severe asthma. Only 33% of asthma deaths occur in the hospital which means many asthma patients who die are either not seeking care or are not being hospitalized with their worsening asthma. Patients at high risk of asthma related death require intensive education and special care. Make sure you know if you are in one of the increased risk groups discussed below.
Importantly, 80-85% who die from asthma develop progressive symptoms over anywhere from 12 hours to several weeks. Only 15 to 20% die in less than 6 hours after developing symptoms. Thus, the vast majority of patients dying from asthma developed symptoms in a time frame that would have allowed them to seek appropriate medical care.

Getting back on your feet
Pregnancy, labor and childbirth are all normal functions of a healthy female body, but do commonly put a strain on your body and general physical condition. Your body has gone through numerous changes in the last several months and also needs to recover from the process of childbirth. It will gradually regain its pre-pregnancy state over approximately 6 weeks following delivery.
After childbirth, it is normal to expect sharp, contraction-like after-pains as the uterus shrinks to its normal size, sore muscles, discomfort or numbness in the vaginal area, as well as temporary difficulty with urination and bowel movements. As the body goes through the recovery process after birth and returns to normal, all these discomforts will resolve.
This period immediately after birth and for a few weeks after birth is called the postpartum period. Women vary in the amount of time that is needed to get back on their feet after giving birth, depending on a variety of factors like general health and fitness levels, length of labor, emotional factors, diet, age, etc as well as the amount of assistance they receive from family and friends after the birth. Some women may be up and about after a few days, although their bodies will take several weeks to complete the healing process. Others may take a little longer. The important thing is to take one day at a time and to give yourself the opportunity to rest as much as you need to.
The natural way
The recovery process described above can be exhausting, and it is important to properly take care of your body so that you can return to your pre-pregnancy state. Accept help from friends and family, and do not expect to be back to normal with chores and daily activities right away.
Extra rest is crucial at this time, so nap when your baby naps. Help replenish fluids lost during breastfeeding by drinking an extra 5 to 8 cups of liquids (non-caffeinated) daily. While rest and time are the best healers, a little natural help can go a long way to assisting your body in its natural process of returning to normal after the birth of your baby. After all, natural remedies have been used by midwives and traditional healers for thousands of years to assist new mothers all over the world!

St. Louis, MO is the most challenging place in the U.S. to live with asthma according to a study scoring 12 factors related to asthma in the 100 largest U.S. metro areas. The study was conducted by the Asthma and Allergy Foundation of America (AAFA) with funding from AstraZeneca. According to a press release from the AAFA, the Foundation reviewed the following 12 factors to rank the metropolitan areas: Crude death rate for asthma; the estimated prevalence of adult and pediatric asthma; risk factors, such as air pollution, pollen counts and public smoking bans; and medical factors, such as the number of asthma medications used per patient and the number of asthma specialists in the area.

Have you ever asked your doctor for antibiotics even though your doctor is not recommending them? This can often be a uncomfortable situation for a parent and a doctor.
A study from the March 2, 2009 issue of Pediatrics finds that antibiotic use in the first year of life is associated with increased risk of developing asthma.
Dr. Fawziah Marra of the Faculty of Pharmaceutical Sciences, University of British Columbia in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada and colleagues used administrative data from all births in British Columbia, Canada from 1997 to 2003 to determine the relationship to antibiotics prescribed in the first year of life and the development of asthma.
Receiving antibiotics was associated with a small increase (12%) in the development of asthma compared to a baby that did not receive antibiotics and the more times a baby received antibiotics the more likely asthma was to develop. The greatest risk was in babies receiving more than 4 courses of antibiotics in the first year of life (30% increase compared to those not receiving antibiotics).
Dr. Marra concludes "The results of our analysis show a small but significant association between antibiotic use and the subsequent development of asthma. In addition, we found a positive dose response between the number of courses of antibiotics in the first year of life and the risk of asthma, but we did not find that the increased risk was associated with any particular type or class of antibiotics."
While I do not think this study means that your should not take antibiotics if they really need them, it may make you think twice about asking for them if your doctor doesn't prescribe them.
