When the loss of a family pet occurs with children involved, it is important to remember that this loss is probably one of the child's first experience with death and as such should be handled with great care as they can be far more sensitive than an adult would be. With children and pet death the child may blame themselves, the parents, or even the veterinarian for not saving the pet. They may feel guilty, depressed, and frightened that others they love may be taken from them.
Never try to protect your child by saying the pet ran away because honesty is important for their future development. This may cause your child to expect the pet to return or even wonder what they did to make it leave. This will extend the grief period even longer than usual, or even instill a feeling of parental betrayal if they do discover the truth. It will also make it harder for a child to accept a new pet in the future, because they may believe that loving a new pet would be a betrayal to their old friend.
If you had to put the pet to sleep, make sure your child understands the difference between ordinary sleep and death, or you risk the child themselves being fearful of going to sleep and not waking up. Make it clear that the pet will not come back or wake up, but that the pet is happy and free of pain.
Expressing your own grief with your child will reassure them that feeling sadness at this time is okay and help them work through their own feelings.

I am currently under treatment for a malarial type infection and have been at my parents house for weeks recovering. A few days after starting a new antibiotic, my body went into shock from something called die off effect. Die off is basically where the bodies of bacteria are killed off so quickly that they block your filtering systems, allowing poisonous back up to occur.
After a few hours of intense nausea, I started walking towards my dads office to tell him something was wrong. On the way, I passed out on the floor. When I awoke, I couldnt move or speak. I remember feeling internally conscious, and praying in my head for someone to find me.
The maid was there that day so I knew she would have to walk into the kitchen and find me eventually. Lying there in a puddle of drool, passing in and out of consciousness, I listened and waited for someone to find me. Finally, about an hour after I had initially passed out, the maid walked into the kitchen. In my head I was screaming for help, but not only did she walk by, but she stepped over me and continued with her cleaning.
Lying there on the floor, panting, half conscious and unable to move, I tried desperately to ask for help, but no sound would come out. She was in the kitchen with me for more than half an hour before she moved on to the rest of the house.
About an hour later, my dad came into the kitchen to get some water and found me unconscious and unable to move. He immediately recognized something was wrong and picked me up and rushed me to the hospital. When I woke up, I was in the car on the way there.
Eventually the shock passed as I received an overload of fluids at the hospital to flush out my kidneys. But I will never forget the let down when that maid stepped over me and left me helpless on the floor. The maids came again today and I stayed in my room until they left, unable to face the woman who ignored me in my time of severe medical need.
My question is, how should I deal with this maid in the future? Should I report her to her company? Should I fire her outright? Should I continue allowing her to work here knowing what she did to me? Should I just assume that alerting someone to my unconscious state was beyond her duties as a maid or human being? How can I face her knowing what she did?
I realize this is a sticky situation, but any help would be greatly appreciated as Im really not sure of how to handle things. I figure some outside advice would be helpful as I know I am too emotionally invested in this to make objective decisions. Thank you for taking the time to answer my question.
Why is this a sticky situation? She left you to die, get rid of her ass now.

To my loyal readers--only the very hardcore remain--let me say that I am still on the 'right side of the dirt.'
I have been absent for several months. Probably the major reason has been that at my work, I have been working on an intense company-wide project that has increasing amounts of my time and energy for many weeks, leaving me with little to say and even less energy to write about it. It didn't really help that this project had to proceed in extreme stealth for competitive marketing reasons.
As of June 1, the results of this effort were announced publicly and since then, I and my co-workers have been riding a bucking bronco due to the company's customers reacting. We are not out of the woods yet, but I do now see daylight at the end of the tunnel; at least I hope that's what it is.
It's time to start posting again, so you can expect to see a bit more from me than you have.

In the last few months, I have undergone somewhat of a transformation in my thinking.
While long ago when I started this blog, I stated that I had chosen the name Cat-e-whompus for the blog because my thinking doesn't follow the lines of any party very well, and that's really whats meant by the word catywhompus. However, many a reader has been offended--and a few cheered--due to my stout support for the Iraqi war and my condemnation of the Democratic party for their unpatriotic opposition to it.
A major part my support of the war was due to my reaction to 9/11. Prior to 9/11, I was voting Democratic and voted against Dubya in 2000 and was appalled at how he 'won' the election, and I was appalled at his appointment of John Ashcroft and Donald Rumsfeld to the cabinet, both of whom I detested, and still do.
I was just as disgruntled as anyone over the fact that Bush was elected in 2000 and stayed that way right up to 9/11. Any day right up until that fateful Tuesday, I would have voted against Bush in a heartbeat.
9/11 for me changed a lot of things. First of all, I saw the attacks both as personal and as an outbreak of war against the United States. They were personal in the sense that I had flown two of the routes and airlines that were attacked frequently from 1996 until 9/11, so I felt I was targeted. That feeling was reinforced by the fact that a colleague from Oracle--where I worked at the time--was Todd Beamer, who uttered the famous words 'lets roll' to his fellow passengers as they rebelled against the hijackers of United Flight 93. I had had some contact with Todd prior to that day because he worked in sales for Oracle, and my job brought me in contact with Oracle sales people all over the world. I didn't know him well, but his death in the attacks really had a considerable impact on me.
After 9/11, I looked at Bush differently. I viewed him as President of a United States at war. Regardless of my previous views, I felt he now deserved everyone's support.
When we bombed and then invaded Afghanistan, I cheered. So did many others.
Later, when Iraq came along and the whole issue of weapons of mass destruction was brought to the fore, I bought in--hook, line, and sinker. I remembered the 91 Gulf War; I had followed Saddam Hussein and his satanic sons in the years hence. I had read about his nuclear program, about how he had gassed the Kurds and the Iranians during the long Iraq-Iran war. It was not a stretch at all to believe he had WMD's, nor that he would willingly cooperate with our enemies by giving them these weapons to use against us.
We plunged into the war, and I expected we would quickly end it, depose Saddam, and come home. It didn't work out that way. Our troops got stuck in Iraq. Saddam proved elusive and difficult to capture. I remembered the debacle when some of our troops in Somalia were killed and their bodies dragged through the street. I remembered Vietnam, and my high school friend who was as nice a boy as you could have wanted to meet, whose parents were deaf-mutes with two completely normal sons, whose name I found and touched and spilled tears over at the Vietnam Memorial.
As the opposition to the Iraq war mounted, I saw Vietnam all over again. I never wanted the troops in Iraq to come home the way troops in my generation came home from Vietnam.
I dug in my heels and supported Bush, supported the war, and wrote about it--heatedly and passionately at times--here on Cat-e-Whompus.
So where's the transformation, you say.
It started with Terry Schiavo and Hurricane Katrina.
The spectacle of all the Republicans rushing to Washington to pass legislation to force poor brain-dead Terry Schiavo's husband to keep her on life support against her own express wishes reminded me of the low esteem I held Republicans in prior to 9/11. And Hurricane Katrina, where the Bush Administration proved the low esteem it held the poor, black people of New Orleans in was more than I could swallow.
Another factor was the lack of evidence of WMD's in Iraq. I held out for a long time that they would be found, but it is of course obvious now that they didn't exist. I can no longer dispute that the pretext for the United States to invade Iraq was false, and I now believe it was fabricated for political purposes.
However, I did not and would never want American troops to be committed to battle and then prevented from acheiving their mission. The troops who have fought and died in Iraq didn't decide to go there; they were sent. They, and subsequent generations who will serve their country should never be allowed to go down in defeat.
Thanks to General David Petraeus, they didn't do so in Iraq.
Also, by mid-2008, it was obvious to me that the war in Iraq was already won; at least as much as it ever could be. The surge had worked, violence was down, Saddam hanged, Zarqawi the terrorist killed. I began to feel it was time to start bringing our boys and girls home from there. They had really gotten the mission accomplished, long after Bush had prematurely declared it accomplished on the aircraft carrier in 2003. I still feel that way, only now, even more so.
However, the biggest part of my transformation came in the fall of 2008 and winter and early spring of 2009 as our economy fell into the deepest and most severe recession of my sixty-one years.
I read some books and a lot of stories and articles about the causes of this recession. By the fall of 2008, I had begun to take a hard look at who I thought would be the countries best choice for president to succeed Bush; I voted for Obama.
Stay tuned for Part II.

Weight loss is always a contentious subject and many methods seem successful for a while and then for no reason fade away. In fact Hoodia weight loss supplements are fast becoming the number one slimming product as manufacturers everywhere can confirm. You may have heard about its properties, but what else do you know about it?
Almost completely, when eaten. To date, nothing medical science has created or investigated has come anywhere near as close to this plant and as a consequence there is a great demand for products containing it as an ingredient.
Scientists actually researched the cactus plant in depth over a period of years using volunteers to test its effectiveness. The entire team wanted nothing else to eat or drink for the rest of the day.
The most amazing thing about Hoodia weight loss products is the fact that users of the product experience no ill effects. The great advantage of this plant is that not only does it suppress appetite and food craving, but it also gives you the right amount of energy necessary to continue daily tasks without feeling tired.
The purpose of the Hoodia weight loss pill is not to starve yourself but to control unnatural and unnecessary food cravings. If you experience problems controlling your hunger then using Hoodia weight loss pills are probably the only way to help your problem.
An important point to make is that weight control products containing real extracts of this plant are expensive because the cactus is not common. Be warned if you see them at very low prices, it is unlikely to be the genuine product. For something as good as Hoodia, it is worth paying extra as it is the best natural form of suppressing the appetite known to man and should not be confused with cheap imitations.

Dog crates or dog cages are a boon to dog owners everywhere. They help to contain dogs within a limited area so they cannot run rampant when you are not at home or when you do not wish to be disturbed. In a house where most of the household inhabitants are out of the house for periods of time, dogs that have the run of the house can cause a lot of damage by way of chewing up the shoes or urinating and defecating anywhere. Keeping your pet in a dog crate can help avoid this problem and help to house break the dog too.
However, not all dogs necessarily agreeable with their masters about being put into a dog cage and so they need to undergo a period which can best be called “crate training.” The key to successful crate training is to make it as easy and pleasant for the dog so that he associates the dog crate with pleasant memories. Forcing your dog into the dog cage will make your dog hate it forever.
When training your dog to use dog crates, take it slow and easy. Let your dog get used to the idea and help him make pleasant associations. You can do this by first placing dog cages in places where your dog is sure to be comfortable in, whether it is in your kitchen or the study.
Dog crates and dog cages should also always be comfortable so your dog can look forward to curling up and cuddling into them. If you find that your dog is unwilling to get into the cage or crate, you may need to resort to a little coaxing or even some bribing. No dog would be able to resist the temptation of getting in if their favourite treat is placed inside the dog crate. A few dog biscuits or a favourite ball is sure to get any dog into dog crates without too much of a fuss.
If you are planning on leaving your dog in a dog crate or dog cage for a period of time, you are going to have to get your dog accustomed to eating in the cage. Most dogs will easily adapt to a dog crate or dog cage willingly when it comes to eating. Again, this is something you will have to do one step at a time so your dog gets used to the idea without feeling stressed. For the first few days, close the door only while your dog is eating and open it when he is done. Gradually start leaving the cage door closed longer and longer after your dog has finished eating, till your dog gets the idea.
Keep in mind training dogs to stay in their dog crates or dog cages takes time. It is a lot of hard work and can sometimes get very frustrating but you need to persist. Once you succeed in doing so, you can go anywhere you want and stay out for a period of time knowing that your dog will not be causing havoc in the house whilst he is home alone. Your shoes will be safe and in one piece and there will be no mess on your carpet. Dog crates and dog cages help keep your dog disciplined, which means more peace of mind for you.

Most defenders of the use of torture use the ticking-bomb argument to rationalize its employment. It is a false premise.
First, as far as we know, there has not been any truly ticking-bomb situation since Sept. 11, 2001, so why rationalize all the torturing that’s gone on to date, or a continuation of the practice with that rationale? Because it might disclose a ticking bomb? In one case, waterboarding went on over a hundred times over a prolonged (many months) period. The ticking bomb would have exploded if it were truly ticking. The idea of the ticking bomb is that we know it is about to go off, and seriously hurt people — not that it might be the case; let’s see.

I have a riding stable with 5 of my own horses. A friend is boarding her daughters pony here. Board covers the bare minimum of costs and the family helps with barn work.
There is a demand for boarding in our area and I have had numerous requests.
What kind of insurance do I need if I want to take on boarders? Also, what kind of insurance do I need if I allow boarders to also ride my horses?
Our one boarder wants to work with a trainer using my horse as she is rapidly outgrowing her pony. The daughter is 14 years old and a very fine rider.
I want to make sure everyone is protected and no problems occur if someone gets hurt on my property.

The Small-Scale Storms:
The reality is that preparing your koi pond for small-scale storms is quite easier compared to preparing for the larger ones. These steps will guide your koi pond to get through such storms.
Stop feeding your pets with food: Your koi pond has enough natural sources for food for the pets to eat so that they will not starve for a long time. If your filters have not been damaged, giving no food to your pets will reduce the risk of ammonia problems in the days to come.
You should make big water changes for the koi pond: If something goes wrong and youre not able to take care of the koi pond immediately, your pets will get the freshest water available to them. What you do is you leave out several inches of water to make up for the coming rainfall to have lesser chances of overflowing problems. If you have drainage system, clear it of any debris to make it work properly. If your koi pond is at ground level and you expect that high waters will occur, add some protection by placing sand bags around the area (this will keep your pets confined within the area if flooding happens).
Place a net over your koi pond to protect it from flying debris: You can use the same net that you have used for the fall to keep out the leaves, and secure it down properly.
Remove any object that can blow over, away or fall into the koi pond: Remember that if you can push a thing over, so can the wind as well! The things that can be blown away by the wind should be removed and then placed inside your house for safety.
Large-Scale Storms:
Large-scale storms prevent preventative measures from being effective. In caring for koi, the only way to completely save your koi pond from large storms is by removing your pets completely from the pond. In caring for koi, its good to have all the equipment and materials that you need to transport your pets readily. The equipment/materials needed to bag and transport your pets is small and can be stored easily when theyre not used.
You must have the appropriate bags to transport your pets. Never use trash bags or regular plastic bags, as these arent designed for the task, and may even damage your pets. Get bags that are big enough to hold your pets. Youre going to need rubber bands for each bag that you purchase. Choose those that have great quality, so as not to let the pressure of the water pop the rubber band out as you are transporting your pets.
Get a net thats big enough to compete with your pets. Although you wont need the net to pull the fish out of the pond, youre going to need it to direct your pets to the place you want them to go. Take the necessary precaution in handling the net, as they can damage your pets, especially the big ones. Also, if you want to give it the best care possible, using a paint bucket is a better way to catch your pets, because these cant hurt your pets like those nets can. Just make sure that your bucket is big enough to accommodate your pets.

Cocker Spaniels (the American version) were derived from English Cocker Spaniels after they found their way to the United States in the late 1800s. Americans preferred to breed a smaller sized Spaniel that would be ideal to hunt quail in various other small birds. Although the exact practice and decision to which the American version was created is not entirely known, we do know that the first true American Cocker Spaniel was recorded to be born sometime in the 1880s and his name was the dog Obo 2nd.
At that time, both the American Cocker Spaniel and the English Cocker Spaniel were considered to be the same breed by the American kennel club. However, in 1935 the AKC decided to finally separate the two as different breeds. The Cocker Spaniel then rose to popularity and was considered the most popular dog breed for a large number of years. It was then divided into three color types: black, particolor, and ASCOB (Any Solid Color Other than Black).
This dog breed is extremely cheerful, playful, and always willing to please. They are great family dogs which are wonderful with little children. If there was a scorecard to rate the Cocker Spaniel on its affection level and friendliness towards animals and people, it would rate at the highest score. This dog is also easy to train and is considered to be a moderate watchdog.

Dont suffer in silence anymore! And dont be embarrassed about it! Hemorrhoids are very common. It is estimated that more than 11 million Americans have hemorrhoids and 3.3 million of them seek medical treatment for hemorrhoids each year! Dont make the mistakes of assuming that hemorrhoids will go away without any treatment. In fact, hemorrhoids never go away if left untreated. It merely subsides temporarily. If conditions worsen, hemorrhoids sufferers can develop serious anal fissures that can only be treated with painful and expensive surgery.
Hemorrhoids are abnormally swollen veins in the rectum and anus. They are similar to varicose veins you might see on a persons legs. When bulging hemorrhoid veins are irritated, they cause surrounding membranes to swell, burn or itch. This can become very painful, and bleeding may even occur.
Hemorrhoids are caused by too much pressure in the rectum, forcing blood to stretch and bulge the walls of the veins, sometimes rupturing them.
There are two types of hemorrhoids (external and internal) and the symptoms for both are different.
External Hemorrhoid Symptoms
External hemorrhoids cause most of the hemorrhoid symptoms we commonly hear about such as pain, burning, and itching. An external hemorrhoid is usually a form of hemorrhoids outside of the anus. Swollen veins will form a lump around the anal opening and if a blot clot develops, the lump will become a thrombosed hemorrhoid. This is extremely painful and one of the most obvious signs of hemorrhoid.
Internal Hemorrhoid Symptoms
Internal hemorrhoids are a lot less painful and thus its symptoms are harder to detect. This form of hemorrhoids is less painful because of the lack of nerve endings inside your anal canal. The basic symptom of internal hemorrhoids is itchiness. Another good sign of internal hemorrhoids is a slight bleeding (youll be able to see some blood on toilet paper or in your toilet bowl) after a visit to the toilet.
Hemorrhoids are dilated blood vessels or veins in the anal or rectal area. They can occur on the outside where they are felt as small bumps when wiping. Internal hemorrhoids however are not seen or felt as they are in our anal canal. They are also harder to detect as they are usually painless. Internal hemorrhoids usually develop due to chronic constipation and are also prone to develop during a womans pregnancy period.
Symptoms of Internal Hemorrhoids
Internal hemorrhoids are more difficult to detect than external hemorrhoids because there is very little pain or sometimes even none at all. The common symptoms are an itch or an unexplainable irritation in your anus canal. The more obvious symptoms would be some blood on toilet paper or in the toilet bowl after bowel movement.
Internal Hemorrhoid Treatments
Several non surgery methods can be used to treat internal hemorrhoids. They include:
Rubber band ligation: A rubber band is placed around the base of the hemorrhoid inside the rectum. The band will cut off blood circulation to the area causing the hemorrhoid to wither away within a few days.
Sitz baths: Soak the rectal area in hot water for about 15-20 minutes 3-4 times a day. This is a simple and effective internal hemorrhoids treatment that will not only help ease the itch but also shrink the hemorrhoid.
Sclerotherapy: Also known as injection therapy. This treatment is commonly used on small internal hemorrhoids. A hardening agent is injected into the hemorrhoid, resulting in a loss of blood flow that causes the hemorrhoid to shrivel away.
When an internal hemorrhoid persists or the lump grows too large, doctors turn to hemorrhoid surgery. This treatment is especially recommended when the internal hemorrhoid becomes prolapsed or becomes very large after basic treatment. The types of internal hemorrhoid surgery are as follows:
Infrared Coagulation: A special device utilizing infrared light is used to burn of hemorrhoidal tissue. This causes the hemorrhoid to shrink and finally recede. Although this sounds scary it is very safe and simple.
Hemorrhoidectomy: This treatment is only used for severe cases where the hemorrhoid does not go away and the bleeding continues to persist after non-surgery treatment. During this hemorrhoid treatment the hemorrhoid is surgically removed while you are under anesthesia. Depending on cases, you may be required to be hospitalized and usually a recovery period will be set by the doctor.
Hemorrhoids are a form of vericose vein. They occur when the veins in and around the rectum and anus become swollen. External hemorrhoids are located near the anus and feels like a large lump. It is sensitive to the touch and will bleed if it is ruptured.
Causes of External Hemorrhoids
Hemorrhoids are commonly caused by too much pressure in the rectum. This will force blood to stretch and bulge in the walls of the veins, sometimes rupturing them. The most frequent causes of external hemorrhoids are as follows:
Pregnancy
Diarrhea
Constipation
Constant sitting
Symptoms of External Hemorrhoids
The symptoms of external hemorrhoids are much more obvious than those of internal hemorrhoids:
Bleeding: Usually seen after bowel movement and a common symptom of hemorrhoids. There will be blood on the toilet paper or in the toilet bowl.
Pain: External hemorrhoids are extremely painful. This is the common reason why external hemorrhoids are detected.
Itching: The anus area may feel a little irritated and itchy. Do NOT scratch it even though the urge to do so is very strong.
Lumps: Sensitive lumps around the anus are also an obvious symptom that you have external hemorrhoid.
Treatments for External Hemorrhoids
Sitz Baths: A Sitz bath is the simplest of treatments. All you need to do is soak in warm water for approximately 10 minutes or so to relieve the swelling and pain of hemorrhoids. This treatment is especially good for prolapsed hemorrhoids.
Moist Wipes: Wiping with toilet paper that is dry may irritate external hemorrhoids. Instead, use moist wipes or just wash down after bowel movement. Medicated pads containing witch hazel (a natural medication) can also be bought from pharmacies. It can help reduce the swelling of your hemorrhoid and more importantly, relive some of the pain that comes with having external hemorrhoids.
Ice Packs: Ice packs is a temporary treatment that can also be used to relieve some of pain and swelling caused by external hemorrhoids.
Applying Cream: Creams that treat external hemorrhoids should be available at any pharmacy. Almost any cream containing witch hazel will work and help reduce the swelling, itching and pain of the hemorrhoid lump.
Hemorrhoids have two main causes: diet and toilet strain. Studies have also shown that these two causes are linked because eating bad food can lead to constipation which then leads to straining on the toilet.
A diet that lacks fiber contributes to hemorrhoids. This is why the western diet which is rich in processed foods has been linked to causing hemorrhoids. The simple treatment or solution to this is to take in more fiber foods such as fiber rich cereal, bananas and bread (just a few examples).
The style of our modern toilets seems to be more comfortable, but actually encourages straining. And people who read while sitting in the toilet also stand a higher chance of getting hemorrhoids due to the extra pressure to the anal veins which are caused by sitting in the toilet for too long.
While diet and toilet straining seem to be the main cause of hemorrhoids, there are other factors involved. Other common hemorrhoid causes include aging, diarrhea, constipation, overuse of laxatives and even pregnancy.
Regardless of the causes of hemorrhoids, you should seek treatment immediately because hemorrhoid rarely heal by itself (hemorrhoids may subside and disappear it is bound to recur). Hence, you should use a hemorrhoid cure that can help you get rid of hemorrhoids permanently once and for all!
Whether you have hemorrhoids or youre trying to prevent it, there is a right hemorrhoids diet that you can and should follow.
Fiber is an important part of a hemorrhoids diet. If you are currently suffering from hemorrhoids take bulk fiber supplements daily. This can help with your current hemorrhoids condition as well as prevent hemorrhoid recurrence. Just note though that bulk fiber may take a few days to work.
Apart from supplements, including more natural foods in your diet such as bran, whole-grain breads, cereal, fruits and leafy vegetables are a healthy way to include the much needed fiber into your system.
You should also drink more water to soften your stool and to avoid straining. Aside from reducing straining, passing softer stool also helps ease irritation and pain on existing hemorrhoids. 8 glasses of water a day is the ideal and recommended number.
To prevent hemorrhoids, it is also best to avoid processed food (fast food is a good example) in your diet. This is because refined or processed foods have small amounts of fiber content. Foods like these do not contain enough roughage for the intestine to pass stool easily which causes strain in the rectum during bowel movement.
A hemorrhoids diet means that you should avoid foods that could cause indigestion, gas and diarrhea.

Cats are wonderful creatures and bring much joy to their owners - from small children to the elderly living on their own. They quickly become part of our family, in fact they think they own us! However, there are times when they have a problem that cant be resolved immediately, when we, as responsible owners, need some advice. It can be anything from finding out why your cat is continually scratching at his or her ears, why they have suddenly stopped using the litter box or whats the best food to feed them. Perhaps you want to house train your cat with a minimum of stress to you both, or you want to stop your cat scratching the furniture. Do you want to know what is wrong with your cat and whether a trip to the vet is necessary?
Cat Problems Resolved contains a growing series of articles on various problems that I or others have had with our cats or kittens.

Our second rescue was just this last September. My coworker came in one day and told me that her neighbor was abusing his dog. She and her husband witnessed this man beating his dog with a rake and shooting it with a BB gun. They had been woken up to horrible screaming...which was the dog. She called the police but they didn't do anything except tell them to call the Humane Society.
Apparently it's a lot harder to get someone out to investigate an abuse case than I thought. It took more than two weeks to get anyone out to their house where the animal people were able to witness the dog interacting with the man. It was obvious to them that the dog was abused and they went to his house and gave him a choice...give up the dog or go to court. He gave up the dog...telling them that it was untrainable, stupid, part wolf, and worthless.
Uh huh. Right. So the very next morning I called the pound and got his number. 30 minutes later I was there and he had already been adopted!!! I was heartbroken (because I'd already fallen in love with him even without seeing him) and asked the person at the counter if the people knew his history. Apparently when the animal folks dropped him off they neglected to mention the ABUSE! Jeez. So once I explained that situation she admitted that she wasn't comfortable with the couple who adopted him...the woman was very small and this dog had no idea how to walk on a leash. He was VERY powerful. Nor did they have any other dogs and they had no fenced yard. All in all, not a perfect home for this dog.
She called and explained the situation and the couple agreed to pick another dog. And "Rambo" was ours! I had to leave him there for another two days while he got neutered but that Friday I took him home to meet his new siblings.
It's been an interesting learning experience for him and for us. We learned that forcing him into a crate wouldn't work. Nor did he need it. At first he slept right at my side of the bed, but now he sleeps on the bed with us, right where we want him. He threw himself to the ground the first time I tried walking him with a leash. Now he still pulls but he knows that a leash is a FUN thing.
He has some possessive issues but we're working on them. He gets along wonderfully with the other dogs, although our Malamute had some jealousy issues the first couple of months that caused some angst. And he's started to calm down a lot ... I think he knows that he is home.
And his name is not Rambo, what a stupid name! We renamed him Timber Wolf. He knows how to sit and even shake. He has learned how to play ball (though we're still working on him bringing the ball back and dropping it) and to come when called. He's a wonderful, sweet, smart boy who we can't imagine not having in our lives."
Such beautiful dogs! I had to chuckle at Timber's expression in his photo, as if to say "there's no food in my bowl!" I've seen that look many times from my Rosie who was also formerly abused and deprived of food - in their minds they can never have enough.

Its easy to think that cats dont need much care because most people believe they are independent. While true to some extent, cats still need proper care from their owners. Some are more low maintenance than others, but they all need attention to meet their needs.
It helps to think of them as being in the same category as a small child. Youll need to cat proof your home in much the same way as you would child-proof it. This means putting things out of reach that might harm them. Its easy to set small items on a high shelf to keep toddlers from eating them, for example, but cats are great jumpers and even love high places, so you will need to put those things inside a drawer, cabinet or another room.
Learning about your cats personality goes a long way toward understanding her needs, too. Watch for signs of distress, discomfort, and even how she walks. Note any changes in behavior, appetite, or sleeping habits. If you see something shes never done before, or appears uncoordinated or in pain, its time for a visit to your vet for a professional evaluation.
Also watch for signs of dental problems. If she is eating only on one side of her mouth, for example, there may be a bad tooth, or a gum infection on that side, or possibly even a tiny object that has lodged between the teeth or into the gum. If she wont let you look, take her to someone who can such as the vet!
Providing a proper diet is critical to health and longevity. Be sure to buy appropriate food that it is formulated for your cats age and health. Some companies even make breed-specific foods, as some breeds may have unique needs. Your vet may be able to advise in this area. But be cautious not all vets are well-versed in pet nutrition, often selling a certain brand in their office because they get a commission on it.
Avoid feeding your cat dog food. Its not balanced for feline nutritional requirements and will, over time, result in malnutrition, even if they eat a lot. Use dog food (if you have some) only in an emergency such as when you are out of cat food and cant get to the store because youre trapped in a snow storm. Well, you know what I mean.
Keep dangerous household items and chemicals completely out of reach. Since some cats are quite adept at opening cabinets and you may have no other place to store kitchen supplies, put child-proof latches on the cabinet doors.
Grooming is another critical need for cats. The short hair breeds usually dont need much help from you, as they lick themselves often. But cats with longer hair will need daily brushing to prevent matting. Allowing their fur to mat can lead to hot spots on their skin, a type of painful rash that develops because air cant get to it and oils, dirt, and possibly fleas will get stuck in there and irritate the skin.
Bathing a cat can be an adventure, but dont worry about neglect in this area. Unless they are show cats, they seldom need to be bathed anyway. As long as they are healthy and grooming themselves, they never go outside, and you are able to brush them regularly, they will be clean enough.
Last but not least is to have important phone numbers on hand, preferably near the phone. If you just got the cat, keep the previous owners number ready so you can ask questions or get help if needed. Other numbers to have ready are your vets, the poison control center for animals, and a friend, should you need some assistance with driving or holding the cat. Also, if your cat gets out, be sure to call your local animal control department so they dont pick him up as a stray and take him to the pound. Find out what their policies are and be sure to check with them to see if hes there.
